new cap designs

I've been working on some more hats for the kids. The yellow and purple hats above are caps that I just designed as a I went. The purple cap with the ribbon I'm calling "Ava". The pattern is below. It's not tested, but it's fairly simple. Feel free to make it for personal or charity use.

Ava Hat
Worsted Weight Yarn ( I used Caron Super Soft)
5mm hook
Start with chain 6 - join w/ slip stitch to make a loop
stitches used: ch, dc, back loop only dc, bpdc, slip stitch, x stitch
note: chain 3 at beginning of each row counts as one dc.

Start with chain 6 - join w/ slip stitch to make a loop

1. 12 dc in loop (12 dc)
2. 2 dc in each dc of previous row (24 dc)
3. Chain 3, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next, * dc in next 2 stitches, 2dc in next* repeat around, slip stitch to join (32 dc)
4. Chain 3, dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next, * dc in next 3 stitches, 2dc in next* repeat around, slip stitch to join (40 dc)
5. Chain 3, dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in next, * dc in next 4 stitches, 2dc in next* repeat around, slip stitch to join (48 dc)
6. Chain 3, dc in next 4 dc, 2 dc in next, * dc in next 5 stitches, 2dc in next* repeat around, slip stitch to join (56 dc)
7. Chain 3, dc in next 5 dc, 2 dc in next, * dc in next 5 stitches, 2dc in next* repeat around, slip stitch to join (64 dc)
8. Chain 3, dc in each stitch around , slip stitch to join in BLO (64 dc)
9. Chain 3, Back-loop-only DC in each stitch around, slip stitch to join )64 dc)
10. Chain 3, X stitch around (32 Xs)
11. Chain 3, dc around, slip stitch to join in BLO (64 dc)
12. Chain 3, Back-loop-only DC in each stitch around, slip stitch to join (64 dc)
13. Chain 3, dc in next stitch, *bpdc in next 2 stitche, dc in next 2 stitches* repeat from * to* around slip stitch to join (64 dc)
14. Chain 3, dc in next stitch, *bpdc in next 2 stitche, dc in next 2 stitches* repeat from * to* around slip stitch to join (64 dc)
15. chain 1, reverse sc around, slip stitch to join, finish off (64 sc)
weave in loose ends

weave a strip of 1/4" ribbon through X stitch row and tie with a bow.

X-Stitch: DC in previous stich of last row, dc in next stitch (forms an X)
skip next dc and dc in next stitch, go back and dc in skipped stitch.
dcs will cross to form Xs.

If you use this pattern and find any problems, please let me know.

I have a 1yr old that absolutely loves to were hats so I'm getting in to crocheting. I love the pink hat with the little purple flower is that also an Ava hat? I'm going to give your Ava hat a try :O). Thanks Gen

  4. Hi Amanda,
That one I just sort of made up as I went. It's very basic. I used all HDC increasing each row till I got the size I wanted. Then for the last row I alternated a hdc with a front-post hdc and finished up with a row of reverse single.

    Hope that helps.
    :)

  6. I finally finally found the pattern for that pink hat (which is good because I want to make more!)

It is Auntie M's design - A Rose is a Rose hat!

I have looked everywhere for the pattern to the crochetgoddess spring into Winter hat, you have pictured. I cannot find it. Can you please tell me where I can get that pattern

  8. I have started the Ava hat, just beautiful, but I am on row 13 and I do not know what the term "bpdc in next 2 stitche" means...I am new to crochet, doing very well, until this term...thank you Linda

    ReplyDelete
  9. Hi Linda!
I hope you check back for the answer! BPDC is "back post double crochet" It is just like a double crochet, but instead of working in the top of the stitch, you work around the post of the stitch going from the front around the back. You're probably reading that and wondering what the heck I'm talking about, so look at this website for a better explanation.

  10. Hi,
I've looked everywhere for the "A rose is a rose" hat. It seems the website is with the pattern is no longer available. Do you happen to have the pattern?

    Thank you so much.

  11. I'm sorry Kathleen, if the link doesn't work, I suppose its not available any longer - which is really sad because I love that hat!
If I do find it somewhere online, I'll post another link, but if the designer took it down, I guess it's no longer available :(

For those of you looking for the "A Rose Is A Rose" crochet hat pattern (copyright 2003 by Auntie M's free crochet patterns), you can still find it by going to Auntie M's free crochet patterns, click on free patterns, then scroll past the baby patterns to about the second or third box down. There you will find A Rose Is A Rose hat. The lettering is hard to read (blue on black background), but it's still there in the archives. I just printed another copy. Hope this helps.

  13. Thank you, Donna!

  16. Do you have your other crochet patterns in a database somewhere for access? You have many pictures of patterns I would like to try! -Marci

    ReplyDelete
  17. Thanks Marci!

My original patterns are peppered throughout my blog. I need to find a way to have on page of links to all of them.

If I can find someone savy enough to help with that, I'll post them.

    :-)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Well, you could make a separate blog that you posted only your patterns to, then just make sure you label them with a category (hats, bags, clothing, afghans, etc) and then add a label gadget to the side of your blog for easy access to the different patterns you have posted. I don't know if that helps, but I know so many would love it! On this blog, you could just post a permanent link directing people to the original patterns on your pattern blog (page). It's just about as good or better than a website!

    ReplyDelete
  19. um...I just found a link to your Pattern Place. PERFECT! You didn't need my advice at all. Thank you so much for the helps on creating such beautiful works!

  22. I have just started crocheting and need help. I am doing the ava hat, it is adorable!! On step 7 after I have finished I still have one dc left. If I were to slip stitch it leaves a hole. Is this how it is suppose to be? I have done it twice and counted everything, but keep on having the same thing. Thank You

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hi Nurse,

I'm sorry you're having trouble! I haven't made this hat in so long - I should try it again. Looking back over the pattern, I'm wondering if I miscalculated the stitch count. Nobody else has reported a problem, but it looks like I did something wrong, so the problem is probably me and not you!

Not to worry. This will be easy to correct. What I would do if I were you, is to do a stitch in that last stitch in row 7. b Then count how many stitches you have in the row. In Row 8 where you do an even row of stitches, either do one extra, or do one reduction to get to the correct stitch count - then keep going. Because it's crochet in the round, it will be very forgiving, and nobody will see the adjustment.

I'm going to try the pattern again myself, and if I did do the counts wrong, I'll correct and update.

    Hope this helps!

Hi! Great hats! Thank you for posting this pattern. I do have a question though...on step 10, it says to do a X stitch? What is that (I'm new to crocheting)? Is there a link somewhere online that can tell me or teach me how to do it or maybe an alternative for that row of stitches that would be better for a beginner to use?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Hi!

The X stitch is basically 2 double crochets done crossing over each other to form a fixure "X".

You can find a tutorial on it here:
    http://www.crochetcabana.com/stitches/stitches-x-stitch.htm

If it's too difficult to follow, you could DC in every other stitch w/ a slip stitch or sc in between, and then weave the ribbon through that.

    Good luck!!

  32. I love the Ava pattern, and would love to make it.
However please can you tell me what the British equivelent is for "worsted" yarn ? Also "baby sport" I cannot find either of these in our shops.
    Thanks
    Debbie

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hi Debbie,

I hope you'll check back for the answer. I'm not familiar with British terminology, but I checked on Google and according to them (and google knows everything, right?)

    Worsted Weight = 10-ply
    Baby Weight = 3-ply

    I hope that helps!!

I haven't been crocheting a month yet and I really like you hat pattern but am having problem at the beginning of the pattern. I was wondering if its starting off as a spiral or is a sl st suppose to connet the st.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm so glad you like the pattern!

The hat is worked in rounds, not as a spiral. The slip stitch at the end completes each round, then start the next row.

    Hope that makes sense!!

  37. Hi Wormie, I have just started to crochet baby hats. My daughter is hoping for a spring baby and I am trying to find a crchet pattern for a baby crocheted headband. I have found the headbands on ebay which I probably will buy but I would like to make some myself. Any ideas or have you created a babyies headband. Thanks Kimela

    ReplyDelete
  63. Hi Beck,

I'm not sure what you did wrong. When you say #8, you mean you finished the 8th row? The hat should have a gentle cup shape by that point. Without seeing what you did, it's hard for me to advise you. I might try to finish it and see what it does. Sorry I can't be more help.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Hi!

I think most people are just correcting this as they go along but just FYI, in order to get 64 sts in row 7, it should read, dc in next 6 stitches, instead of 5...
    7. Chain 3, dc in next 5 dc, 2 dc in next, * dc in next 6 stitches, 2dc in next* repeat around, slip stitch to join (64 dc)

    ReplyDelete
  77. Tiffany - thanks for the note. I haven't made this hat in a few months and don't remember having a problem. I'll try to make one again soon, and correct the pattern if this is the case. Thank you so much.

Your intro to the Ava hat you say you've been working on children hats, but in one of your replies in the comment section I recall you saying the instructions are for an adult size Am I remembering incorrectly?

    ReplyDelete
  81. the Ava hat as written is for a large child/small adult size. I designed this when I was making chemo caps for kids in the hospital. It should work for an older child or smaller adult. It will be too big for little girls.

    ReplyDelete
  82. pavasa5:35 PM

Thank You Wormie. I wanted to make sure, because I needed instructions for a child' hat.
Another question. Is there a way to figure out the size to make for different ages of children? I wouldn't think a 4-5 yr. old would wear the same size as an 7-8 yr. old.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Pavasa, I don't have children myself, so I'm not really good with the whole size estimation thing. I was surprised to find out that kids heads aren't all that much smaller than adult heads once they're past the toddler stage. If you like the Ava hat, you may want to try to make it with a hook one size smaller - you may find that works. I can't guarantee it though. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  84. pavasa12:46 AM

Wormie, you said "I was surprised to find out that kids heads aren't all that much smaller than adult heads once they're past the toddler stage. If you like the Ava hat, you may want to try to make it with a hook one size smaller" I'll try that, too. Also found that not increasing as many rows makes the hat smaller, too.

what does BLO means on ur ava hat step 8&11.beautiful hats. thanks for sharing them.

    ReplyDelete
  96. BLO means "back loop only".

When you do the crochet stitch, don't go through both sides of the stitch in the previous row - go through only the back half of the stitch.

    Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  97. Hi I am a beginner at crichet and I've been trying to figure out this pattern. I have the majority of it but my question is, at the beginning of the first two rows, do you join them cause there is a huge hole when I try to join them. I need a little advise to the start of it. I can go from there

    ReplyDelete
  98. Hi Lacy.
Yes, you do want to join all rows. I haven't had this problem with the "holes" but one trick you can do is after the join, do a sc before you do the next dc. That helps to fill the hole.

    Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  99. Phyllis8:43 PM

Here is an ignorant question. What is "to"?

    ReplyDelete

That means repeat the instructions in between the two stars.

Hi...Love your hats. Loved the ribbon idea. Always looking for embellishments for my Chemo hats.
For the beginners or anyone who ends up with holes when you are starting your hats in the round, there is method you can use called the "Magic Circle" which allows you to pull the end and close up the beginning hole and it disappears into your work. Instructions for it are on YTube. Hope this helps. Happy crocheting.

I was wonder if you could help me.
I just started crocheting again after a long
Time. I'm doing the Ava hat everything is okay until I come to the 10th row the
      X stitch. I'm getting 22 or23 X's not 32.
I'm going into the 4th stitch it just won't
Come out right. What can I do?
      Thanks. Monica

Where can I get the rest of the hats besides the Ava one.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Hi Monica. I don't understand - when you say that you are going into the 4th stitch, do you mean you've done 4 stitches or you are trying to make the x in the fourth stitch?

The directions for X stitch are: X-Stitch: DC in previous stich of last row, dc in next stitch (forms an X)
skip next dc and dc in next stitch, go back and dc in skipped stitch.
dcs will cross to form Xs.

Perhaps this You tube video on X stitch will help:

  112. This is a lovely design! I love the simplicity of it. I also hunted up the pink hat. (just because there were so many who asked about it) and the link you have listed is now broken. Here is the new link...
    http://picklesandicecreamdesigns.blogspot.com/2011/11/rose-is-rose-hat.html
I hope that helps. I won't be making it, but some folks will be glad to have the new link...oh, and it is still free pattern.

Personally, I love the simplicity of the hat in THIS pattern and I want to thank you for sharing it with everyone!

Take a look at Row 7, I think it should read: Chain 3, dc in next 5 dc, 2 dc in next, * dc in next 6 stitches, 2dc in next* repeat around, slip stitch to join (64 dc)

  115. How did you do the special stitch at the bottom of the pink hat? It's not quite shell. Making caps to donate to the oncology unit of the hospital my father is receiving treatments at. Any pattern help would be appreciated! Really liked this pink one you have especially as it's so feminine.

  117. I really like your Ava pattern! I'm wondering if you can tell me how to make it larger -- when I made it, it fits a 10 yr. old girl -- I'd like it for adults too. Thanks

  118. I'd like to know how to enlarge the Ava hat for adults (mine fit a 10-yr-old, but want it larger too).

    ReplyDelete
  119. I used the suggested yarn & hook, my gauge is fine, followed the instructions to a "T" & the hat is definitely not child-sized. In fact, it is almost too big for an adult at this point. It is not shaping like a dome when folded in half. Argh! I hate when this happens! Oh well, guess I'll frog it & use a smaller hook, less increases & see how it goes. Wish me luck! LOL!

  120. I'm sorry you are having problems, Barb. I have made this hat for both kids and adults, and have never had a problem. It does not work up as a perfect dome, though. I remember it looking a bit pointed, but it was fine when it was worn.
    Good luck.

You might have said in one of the comments and I have read just about all of them. I want to make the hats for 3 yr. olds. (twins). Do I just use a smaller hook? Like for the Ava hat? I like them all and really don't know which one I will end up making. I will be going to a bazaar in Nov. I would like to make different sizes for that but I have an order for the 3 yr. olds. Thanks, Betty

  122. For a smaller hat, I would use finer yarn (baby or fingering) and a smaller hook.

I would love to have the pattern for all the hats. Can you help me get the patterns? Also, I couldn't see a way to print the pattern at the top of the page. How do I print the pattern? Thanks! GGram

  129. Love your hats! Please help.....I followed the pattern exactly but my hat is VERY large. Too big for my own head and I'm an adult. I used red heart super saver medium worsted yarn with 5mm needle. I tried a hat before and the same thing happened. Do you have any idea why they come out so large?

    ReplyDelete
  130. Hi Melanie. Sorry you're having troubles. I crochet on the tight side. I'm guessing you work more loosely. Try using a smaller hook. Hope that helps.

Thank you so much for this pattern. I am a beginner and I really wanted to make a hat. I was completely frustrated by the instructions on other patterns that would say things like, "Complete 12 rounds, increasing 4 stitches each round." Huh? This is Greek to a beginner. I really appreciate the way you spelled out exactly where to do two stitches and where to do one. That made this pattern totally do-able. I just completed my first hat and I am thrilled. I just wish I had you to help me figure out how to evenly space my stitches! Thank you for all you do to share your passion with others!

    1. The pattern is for an older child (teen). You can use baby weight yarn and a smaller hook to make it for a younger child.
