I've been working on some more hats for the kids. The yellow and purple hats above are caps that I just designed as a I went. The purple cap with the ribbon I'm calling "Ava". The pattern is below. It's not tested, but it's fairly simple. Feel free to make it for personal or charity use.
Ava Hat
Worsted Weight Yarn ( I used Caron Super Soft)
5mm hook
Start with chain 6 - join w/ slip stitch to make a loop
stitches used: ch, dc, back loop only dc, bpdc, slip stitch, x stitch
note: chain 3 at beginning of each row counts as one dc.
Start with chain 6 - join w/ slip stitch to make a loop
1. 12 dc in loop (12 dc)
2. 2 dc in each dc of previous row (24 dc)
3. Chain 3, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next, * dc in next 2 stitches, 2dc in next* repeat around, slip stitch to join (32 dc)
4. Chain 3, dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next, * dc in next 3 stitches, 2dc in next* repeat around, slip stitch to join (40 dc)
5. Chain 3, dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in next, * dc in next 4 stitches, 2dc in next* repeat around, slip stitch to join (48 dc)
6. Chain 3, dc in next 4 dc, 2 dc in next, * dc in next 5 stitches, 2dc in next* repeat around, slip stitch to join (56 dc)
7. Chain 3, dc in next 5 dc, 2 dc in next, * dc in next 5 stitches, 2dc in next* repeat around, slip stitch to join (64 dc)
8. Chain 3, dc in each stitch around , slip stitch to join in BLO (64 dc)
9. Chain 3, Back-loop-only DC in each stitch around, slip stitch to join )64 dc)
10. Chain 3, X stitch around (32 Xs)
11. Chain 3, dc around, slip stitch to join in BLO (64 dc)
12. Chain 3, Back-loop-only DC in each stitch around, slip stitch to join (64 dc)
13. Chain 3, dc in next stitch, *bpdc in next 2 stitche, dc in next 2 stitches* repeat from * to* around slip stitch to join (64 dc)
14. Chain 3, dc in next stitch, *bpdc in next 2 stitche, dc in next 2 stitches* repeat from * to* around slip stitch to join (64 dc)
15. chain 1, reverse sc around, slip stitch to join, finish off (64 sc)
weave in loose ends
weave a strip of 1/4" ribbon through X stitch row and tie with a bow.
X-Stitch: DC in previous stich of last row, dc in next stitch (forms an X)
skip next dc and dc in next stitch, go back and dc in skipped stitch.
dcs will cross to form Xs.

ReplyDeleteThat one I just sort of made up as I went. It's very basic. I used all HDC increasing each row till I got the size I wanted. Then for the last row I alternated a hdc with a front-post hdc and finished up with a row of reverse single.

BPDC is "back post double crochet" It is just like a double crochet, but instead of working in the top of the stitch, you work around the post of the stitch going from the front around the back. You're probably reading that and wondering what the heck I'm talking about, so look at this website for a better explanation.

For those of you looking for the "A Rose Is A Rose" crochet hat pattern (copyright 2003 by Auntie M's free crochet patterns), you can still find it by going to Auntie M's free crochet patterns, click on free patterns, then scroll past the baby patterns to about the second or third box down. There you will find A Rose Is A Rose hat. The lettering is hard to read (blue on black background), but it's still there in the archives. I just printed another copy. Hope this helps.

Well, you could make a separate blog that you posted only your patterns to, then just make sure you label them with a category (hats, bags, clothing, afghans, etc) and then add a label gadget to the side of your blog for easy access to the different patterns you have posted. I don't know if that helps, but I know so many would love it! On this blog, you could just post a permanent link directing people to the original patterns on your pattern blog (page). It's just about as good or better than a website!

ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you're having trouble! I haven't made this hat in so long - I should try it again. Looking back over the pattern, I'm wondering if I miscalculated the stitch count. Nobody else has reported a problem, but it looks like I did something wrong, so the problem is probably me and not you!
Not to worry. This will be easy to correct. What I would do if I were you, is to do a stitch in that last stitch in row 7. b Then count how many stitches you have in the row. In Row 8 where you do an even row of stitches, either do one extra, or do one reduction to get to the correct stitch count - then keep going. Because it's crochet in the round, it will be very forgiving, and nobody will see the adjustment.
I'm going to try the pattern again myself, and if I did do the counts wrong, I'll correct and update.

ReplyDeleteThe X stitch is basically 2 double crochets done crossing over each other to form a fixure "X".

If it's too difficult to follow, you could DC in every other stitch w/ a slip stitch or sc in between, and then weave the ribbon through that.

ReplyDeleteThe hat is worked in rounds, not as a spiral. The slip stitch at the end completes each round, then start the next row.

Hi Wormie, I have just started to crochet baby hats. My daughter is hoping for a spring baby and I am trying to find a crchet pattern for a baby crocheted headband. It is only one stitch i think but I can not find a pattern for it. I have seen artifical flowers attached to the headbands. I have found the headbands on ebay which I probably will buy but I would like to make some myself. Any ideas or have you created a babyies headband. Thanks Kimela

ReplyDeleteThis hat, when I make it, fits an adult. You can make it smaller by using a smaller hook. If that is not enough, remove 2 stitches from each row.

ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what you did wrong. When you say #8, you mean you finished the 8th row? The hat should have a gentle cup shape by that point. Without seeing what you did, it's hard for me to advise you. I might try to finish it and see what it does. Sorry I can't be more help.

Your intro to the Ava hat you say you've been working on children hats, but in one of your replies in the comment section I recall you saying the instructions are for an adult size Am I remembering incorrectly?
ReplyDeletethe Ava hat as written is for a large child/small adult size. I designed this when I was making chemo caps for kids in the hospital. It should work for an older child or smaller adult. It will be too big for little girls.

Pavasa, I don't have children myself, so I'm not really good with the whole size estimation thing. I was surprised to find out that kids heads aren't all that much smaller than adult heads once they're past the toddler stage. If you like the Ava hat, you may want to try to make it with a hook one size smaller - you may find that works. I can't guarantee it though. Good luck!

ReplyDeleteWhen you do the crochet stitch, don't go through both sides of the stitch in the previous row - go through only the back half of the stitch.

Hi I am a beginner at crichet and I've been trying to figure out this pattern. I have the majority of it but my question is, at the beginning of the first two rows, do you join them cause there is a huge hole when I try to join them. I need a little advise to the start of it. I can go from there

ReplyDeleteYes, you do want to join all rows. I haven't had this problem with the "holes" but one trick you can do is after the join, do a sc before you do the next dc. That helps to fill the hole.

ReplyDeleteFor the beginners or anyone who ends up with holes when you are starting your hats in the round, there is method you can use called the "Magic Circle" which allows you to pull the end and close up the beginning hole and it disappears into your work. Instructions for it are on YTube. Hope this helps. Happy crocheting.

ReplyDeleteI used the suggested yarn & hook, my gauge is fine, followed the instructions to a "T" & the hat is definitely not child-sized. In fact, it is almost too big for an adult at this point. It is not shaping like a dome when folded in half. Argh! I hate when this happens! Oh well, guess I'll frog it & use a smaller hook, less increases & see how it goes. Wish me luck! LOL!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you are having problems, Barb. I have made this hat for both kids and adults, and have never had a problem. It does not work up as a perfect dome, though. I remember it looking a bit pointed, but it was fine when it was worn.

You might have said in one of the comments and I have read just about all of them. I want to make the hats for 3 yr. olds. (twins). Do I just use a smaller hook? Like for the Ava hat? I like them all and really don't know which one I will end up making. I will be going to a bazaar in Nov. I would like to make different sizes for that but I have an order for the 3 yr. olds. ReplyDeleteFor a smaller hat, I would use finer yarn (baby or fingering) and a smaller hook.

Love your hats! Please help.....I followed the pattern exactly but my hat is VERY large. Too big for my own head and I'm an adult. I used red heart super saver medium worsted yarn with 5mm needle. I tried a hat before and the same thing happened. Do you have any idea why they come out so large?
ReplyDeleteHi Melanie. Sorry you're having troubles. I crochet on the tight side. I'm guessing you work more loosely. Try using a smaller hook. Hope that helps.

ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this pattern. I am a beginner and I really wanted to make a hat. I was completely frustrated by the instructions on other patterns that would say things like, "Complete 12 rounds, increasing 4 stitches each round." Huh? This is Greek to a beginner. I really appreciate the way you spelled out exactly where to do two stitches and where to do one. That made this pattern totally do-able. I just completed my first hat and I am thrilled. I just wish I had you to help me figure out how to evenly space my stitches! Thank you for all you do to share your passion with others!

ReplyDeleteThe pattern is for an older child (teen). You can use baby weight yarn and a smaller hook to make it for a younger child.
